Meeting |
This month we are very privileged to have as our speaker Mr. Woodrow Morrison. Mr. Morrison is a member of the Haida Nation, and he is one of the few (possibly the only) living person(s) to be indoctrinated in the traditions of the great Haida seagoing canoes by tribal elders who had actually built and used these magnificent craft. Thus, Mr. Morrison is the caretaker of hard won knowledge concerning design, construction and seamanship, which his people garnered over untold centuries of seafaring. Mr. Morrison has participated in a coastal voyage in a canoe replica, so his knowledge includes first hand experience. Come to the meeting, and gain some unique insights into Haida canoe culture and lore. |

The evening's program will be a presentation by marine historian Charles Moore on the salmon-trolling
"handliners" of the BC Coast. Handliners were one-man rowboats, typically double-ended, that were built and fished by a hardy group of BC pioneers during the first half of the 20th century. Charles' talk will be historical, looking at the place of the Georgia Strait handliner (both man and boat) in the
history of the Pacific Salmon fishing industry. He will also describe the defining characteristics of handliners as a boat type, based on his recent survey of all the extant examples that he could locate. A follow-up presentation is scheduled for the October 20th meeting, in which Larry Westlake will tell us about building a handliner replica this past summer. |

Sechelt
boatbuilder (and Oarlock and Sail member), Larry Westlake, will
give an illustrated talk on building a replica handliner.
The handliner replica project was mounted this past summer under
the auspices of the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives.
Larry was the lead boatbuilder on the project which prodcued a very
nice double-ended, carvel-planked rowing workboat. |

Annual
General Meeting |
Following
the business meeting, Gerry Stensgaard will present a slide show
on "Wooden Boats in England (Plus a Few
Others)". Gerry travelled extensively around the south
of England this summer, and in the course of his trip he managed
to visit and document a number of maritime events, harbours,
rivers, historic vessels, marine heritage sites, and
boats, boats, boats! The show will also include a few
images from this year's Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival. |

Annual
Christmas/Winter Social. |
The Oarlock and Sail Wooden Boat Club December meeting takes the form of our annual Christmas/Winter party. The gathering will be held on Thursday, December 15th, and will be held at Alder Bay Boat Co. (1247 Cartwright Street, Granville Island). The event will begin at 7:30 PM. This is a pot-luck affair, so please bring a plate of your favourite seasonal finger food to share (either sweet or savoury).
If you wish to bring alcoholic beverages, please do not bring home-made products. The club will have a special event liquor licence in effect for the evening, and only commercially produced products will be allowed on the premises. Road blocks are frequently mounted on the Granville Is. causeway, so moderation is in order.
This is traditionally the night when the Oarlock and Sail musicians come out of hiding, so if you play an instrument bring it along and join the Christmas jam session. If you don't play, you can join the singing, or just listen. |
