Vogler Project: Hood Ends |
|
Many
of the original planks were badly damaged at the stem. These 'hood
ends' suffered from rot around the fasteners, many of which were
ferrous and had rusted away.
We decided to replace the most badly damaged hood ends by scarfing on new ones. This image shows the top two strakes cut back about 2" and scarfed. The third has the new hood end epoxied on.

| Adding
these new hood ends was a very tricky bit of boat joinery. The
original planks had rolling bevels to allow the planking to come in
flush in at the stem and the new pieces had to match these bevels.
This image shows a small fence clamped to the plank stock to help guide the rabbet plane.
