Vogler Project: Stem |
|
The
original stem and stem knee.
Actually, this stem piece is not the true original, but is from an earlier repair done several years ago. The main problem with it was that it was not wide enough. This made the stem too narrow and gave the boat an blunt, clunky look.

||
| The
rabbet in the new stem was copied from the old by drawing a series
of parallel, horizontal lines on the old stem (with the stem
vertical) and a corresponding set on the new stem.
The points where the rabbet and bearding lines intersected the reference lines were then transferred to the new stem. Every second section was chiselled out, using a fid the same thickness of the plank to determine the vertex. Once this was done, the remaining squares were done so that they would merge with their neighbours.
