Oarlock and Sail Members' Boats |
|
Currently the club owns five boats, with two of these still under construction. Eventually, we plan to make all of these boats available to OSBUG members. | |||

| Description:
Mr. A.C. Fancy was a solitary boat
builder who worked in a small shop on Coal Harbour (near today’s
Bayshore Inn) circa 1930 - 1950. For many years Mr. Fancy produced boats
similar to this one as tenders for salmon trollers. With her
smooth-skinned hull and relatively heavy planking, this boat can withstand
beaching on rocky shores better than a clinker-built hull whose planking
laps might be damaged by such treatment.
Oarlock and Sail Wooden Boat Club members took the lines of this small but rugged craft from an original boat that was donated to the Britannia Heritage Shipyard in Steveston by Alan Haig-Brown. The Fancy pram is the first boat built as a group project by Oarlock and Sail members. She is carvel planked of western red cedar over steam-bent oak frames and is copper fastened. The pram was launched in September 2000. One of these days we’ll get around to making a set of floor boards for her! |

Boat Name: | Sam Mc | ||
| Length: | 12 feet | |||
| Launch Date: | October 2002 | |||
| Designer: | Richard Kolin | |||
| Builder: | OLAS Members | |||
| Boat Type | Rowing/Sailing Skiff | |||
| Owner: | OLAS | |||
| Email: | contact@woodenboatclub.ca | |||
| Description:
“Sam Mc” is a 12-foot
flat-bottomed skiff built to Rich Kolin’s “Heidi” design. She is
named after Sam McKinney, a maritime historian and author who was
responsible for forging the Oarlock and Sail Wooden Boat Club’s present
association with the Vancouver Maritime Museum. During the summer months,
Oarlock and sail members demonstrate wooden boat building techniques in
the museum’s Heritage Harbour, and that is how Sam’s namesake came to
be constructed.
Following the detailed instructions in Kolin’s book Traditional Boatbuilding Made Easy – Building Heidi, Oarlock and sail members built this boat over two summers. She was launched in October 2002. “Sam Mc’s” bottom is cross-planked in Douglas fir, and the sides are lapstrake (clinker) western red cedar. The frames are Douglas fir, as is the transom. The stem is laminated oak. All fastenings are copper and bronze. “Sam Mc” is rigged with a single spritsail and she has proven to be lively under sail.

| Boat Name: | Vogler | |||
| Length: | 12 feet | |||
| (Re)Launch Date: | TBD | |||
| Designer: | Vogler Brothers Boatbuilders | |||
| Builder: | Vogler Brothers Boatbuilders | |||
| Boat Type | Clinker row boat | |||
| Owner: | OLAS | |||
| Email: | contact@woodenboatclub.ca | |||
|
Description: Vogler Brothers Boatbuilders constructed this 12-foot clinker-built (lapstrake) boat at their shop in Victoria, circa 1920 – 1930. For many years it was used as a livery boat at the Yellow Point Lodge on Vancouver Island. Following its stint at Yellow Point, the skiff came into the possession of the Gordon family, and she entered a new career as a recreational rowing craft. When the Gordon family decided that she was “worn out”, the boat was carefully stored in the rafters of the family garage. When garage demolition loomed in 2002, Alistair Gordon donated the skiff to the Oarlock and Sail Wooden Boat Club. Thanks to its dry storage in the Gordon’s garage, the boat was a good candidate for repair, and since its acquisition by the club, it has been an on-going restoration project for Oarlock and Sail members. Restoration is nearing completion, and the Vogler skiff will soon be ready for another 70 years of use. |
